Kayak and Paddleboard Insurance Florida: Is It Worth Covering?

FloridaCover Editorial Team·July 20, 2025·6 min read

Most Florida kayakers and paddleboarders assume they are covered by their homeowners policy. In most cases, they are wrong — here is what you actually need.

The Homeowners Coverage Assumption Is Usually Wrong

The overwhelming majority of Florida kayak and paddleboard (SUP) owners assume their homeowners or renters insurance policy covers their watercraft — for theft at home and liability on the water. This assumption is partially correct and largely wrong, in a way that leaves most paddlers more exposed than they realize. Understanding exactly what homeowners policies do and do not cover for non-motorized watercraft — and what alternatives exist — helps you make an informed decision about your coverage needs.

What Homeowners Insurance Typically Covers

Standard Florida homeowners insurance policies generally provide limited coverage for small watercraft including kayaks and paddleboards:

  • Theft from home: Most HO policies cover theft of a kayak or SUP when it is stored on your property, subject to your personal property deductible and sublimits for watercraft. Coverage is typically limited to $1,000 to $1,500 for watercraft under the standard personal property section.
  • Theft off premises: Some policies extend personal property coverage to theft away from home, but at lower limits and often with "unattended vehicle" exclusions that create gaps when the kayak is on your car rack.

What homeowners coverage almost never includes: on-water liability for injuries or property damage you cause while paddling. Standard homeowners liability sections specifically exclude liability arising from watercraft equipped with engines, and many exclude liability from all watercraft operations on navigable waters, regardless of whether a motor is involved.

When Standalone Kayak or SUP Coverage Makes Sense

Separate watercraft coverage is worth considering in these situations:

  • High-value fishing kayaks: Premium kayaks from Hobie, Jackson Kayak, Native Watercraft, and Old Town — particularly models with electric pedal drives, fish finders, and full rigging — can cost $3,000 to $7,000 or more. A theft loss at these values significantly exceeds typical HO personal property sublimits for watercraft.
  • Regular coastal, ocean, or open-water use: Kayaks and SUPs used in ocean surf, open bays, or exposed coastal water create real liability exposure if you collide with a swimmer or another vessel. On-water liability coverage is essentially unavailable from homeowners policies.
  • Commercial kayak fishing guides: Guided kayak fishing operations require commercial coverage entirely separate from recreational or homeowners policies. This is not optional — commercial guiding without commercial insurance is a serious exposure.
  • Electronics-equipped kayaks: A full kayak electronics package (fish finder, GPS, action cameras, VHF radio) can add $1,500 to $3,000 to the value. These components warrant separate coverage documentation.

Florida's Wonderful Kayak and SUP Destinations

Florida offers world-class kayaking and paddleboarding across remarkable environments:

  • Everglades National Park: Wilderness kayak camping in one of America's most extraordinary ecosystems. Remote paddling requires safety equipment and self-sufficiency.
  • Crystal River: Famous for swimming with manatees — kayak ecotours are one of the best ways to experience this uniquely Florida encounter.
  • Indian River Lagoon: The most biodiverse estuary in North America, offering spectacular paddling through mangroves and seagrass habitat.
  • Wekiva River: A pristine spring-fed river near Orlando, crystal clear and ecologically extraordinary.
  • Florida Bay and Ten Thousand Islands: Shallow backcountry kayaking through mangrove tunnels and across flats populated with snook, redfish, and roseate spoonbills.
