Center Console Boat Insurance Florida: Offshore Coverage Guide

FloridaCover Marine Specialists·January 20, 2025·8 min read

Center consoles are Florida's most versatile fishing platform — and with values from $50,000 to $500,000+, proper insurance is not optional.

The Center Console: Florida's Favorite Offshore Platform

Center console boats are the defining vessel of Florida offshore fishing culture. Their open design, all-around fishability, and offshore capability have made them the go-to choice for Florida anglers targeting everything from inshore snook and redfish to offshore sailfish, mahi-mahi, and grouper. Premium center console brands — Yellowfin, Contender, Grady-White, Boston Whaler, Pursuit, Release, and SeaVee — have achieved legendary status among Florida anglers, and their prices reflect it. A new 35-foot Yellowfin 350 or Contender 39 Juan sells for $400,000 to $700,000 fully rigged. Even a well-equipped 28-footer can reach $150,000 to $250,000 with twin engines and a full electronics suite.

At these values, choosing the wrong insurance — or buying coverage with gaps that matter offshore — can have catastrophic financial consequences. Understanding what center console boats need from their marine insurance is essential before you sign a policy.

Agreed Value Is Non-Negotiable for Center Consoles

For any center console valued above $50,000 — which means virtually all modern offshore-capable boats — agreed value hull coverage is the only appropriate choice. The reason is simple: ACV coverage applies depreciation at claim time, which could reduce your payout by $30,000 to $100,000 on a high-value center console that depreciates meaningfully over its first 5 to 10 years of ownership. With agreed value, you lock in the insured amount and receive that amount in a total loss regardless of market value changes. For a boat that may be taken miles offshore in the Gulf Stream or across to the Bahamas, where a total loss is a genuine possibility, this protection is fundamental.

Navigation Area: Know Exactly What Your Policy Covers

Navigation area is one of the most important — and most commonly misunderstood — aspects of center console insurance. Most standard Florida marine policies cover coastal navigation within 25 nautical miles of shore. But center console fishing typically extends far beyond this limit:

  • Offshore Gulf Stream fishing from Miami or Fort Lauderdale: 3 to 12 miles offshore
  • Offshore Gulf of Mexico runs from Tampa: 20 to 50 miles
  • Bahamas day runs from Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale: 50 to 80 miles of open ocean crossing
  • Deep-water Atlantic offshore banks from Jacksonville: 40 to 100 miles

If you fish any of these destinations, confirm that your specific navigation area endorsement covers your actual range. Policies often have limits like "25 miles from shore" or "coastal US waters" that would leave you uninsured on a Bahamas day run or a deep-water offshore trip. Ask your broker specifically and get the answer in writing in your policy documents.

Electronics Coverage: Do Not Underinsure the Brains of Your Boat

Modern center consoles carry extraordinary electronics packages. Consider what a fully equipped offshore boat might have aboard:

  • Garmin GPSMAP 8616 multifunction display: $4,000 to $6,000 each (often two or three units)
  • Furuno or Garmin radar: $3,000 to $8,000
  • FLIR thermal camera: $4,000 to $12,000
  • Satellite communications (Iridium or Inmarsat): $2,000 to $5,000
  • VHF radio, AIS transponder, EPIRB, PLB: $2,000 to $4,000 combined
  • Underwater lights, fishfinders, outrigger controls: $2,000 to $8,000

A fully loaded electronics package can represent $25,000 to $50,000 in additional value beyond the base boat. This equipment must be separately itemized and documented in your insurance policy. A standard equipment limit in your hull coverage may not cover the full replacement cost of a premium electronics suite — ask your broker to review electronics coverage specifically.

Bahamas Navigation Extension

A Bahamas navigation extension adds coverage for operation in Bahamian territorial waters, which begins approximately 3 miles offshore from the Bahamian islands. Most Florida carriers offer this extension for an additional $50 to $200 per year — a modest cost for meaningful protection on one of Florida's most popular boating adventures. Confirm the extension covers your full intended cruising area in the Bahamas, including both the Bimini chain and the Exumas if you plan extended trips.
